Earth’s orbit has been perturbed, causing the planet to move closer to the sun over the past 47 years. The phenomenon was named Terrestrial Orbit Lapse, but it’s commonly known as the Lapse. Scientists estimate that it will take about 52 years for the Earth to reach a point where life will no longer be sustainable.
The rising heat melted the pole glaciers sinking most of Europe and other parts of the world. As enormous waves of environmental refugees tried to reach safety, a new wave of colonization took place. Europe once more descended on Africa, forming the dominant Paneuropa.
Due to the Lapse, new electromagnetic fields around the world have rendered all electronics useless, setting back humankind’s technological progress to the early days of the industrial revolution.
As society teeters on the brink of collapse, the Eight Families maintain control through their powerful conglomerates. They declared themselves rulers of Paneuropa’s city-states and fight for authority and influence. They control the army and police, and have established authoritarian regimes in most developed cities. Democracy is a thing of the past, dismantled for the supposed “benefit of the people.”
After the initial chaos subsided, a new kind of social order has developed, consisting of Castes. Those who exist inside the Novum Ordo, and those outside it. No one is equal under the sun any more!
- Luminaries – Members of the Eight Families, down to a fourth degree relationship to the Heads
- Collars – the working force of the conglomerates
- Plebis – people who exist and function outside the system
- Dirt – people who are considered non-persons by the system
In Neu Bonn, the capital of Paneuropa, is divided by the Catharsis Wall into two main areas: the Center where the lower castes are forced to live and the Megastadt where the upper casts strive to maintain order.
